JBL’s story in cinema doesn’t just go back decades—it goes back to the very birth of sound in film.
In the late 1920s, as “talkies” revolutionised the movie industry, JBL founder James B. Lansing was already helping shape the future of cinema audio. He played a critical role in developing the Shearer Horn system, a groundbreaking design that earned a Scientific and Technical Award from the Motion Picture Academy in 1936.
This wasn’t just innovation—it was the foundation of modern cinema sound.
By the early 1940s, Lansing introduced the iconic “Voice of the Theatre” loudspeakers. These systems quickly became the industry benchmark, defining how films should sound in cinemas around the world.
After founding JBL in 1946, Lansing and his team continued to push boundaries, cementing JBL’s role as a leader in professional cinema audio.
In the 1980s, JBL engineers introduced Bi-Radial® constant-directivity horn technology, a major step forward in delivering consistent sound coverage across every seat. This led to the JBL 4675 system, which became a new industry standard.
The system was installed in the Motion Picture Academy’s Goldwyn Theatre in Beverly Hills and selected by Lucasfilm as the first THX®-approved cinema speaker system.
JBL continued to innovate into the 1990s with the JBL 5674, the first modern 3-way screen channel system—delivering greater clarity, impact, and detail across the entire audience.
In 2002, JBL’s contribution to cinema audio was recognised by the Motion Picture Academy through two prestigious Scientific and Technical Awards.
